Perhaps my most popular image, is this photograph of Lotus Blossoms. They’re growing in the Tai Pavilion pool within the Olbrich Gardens in Madison, WI. Garden Urn and First Snowfall were also photographed in this favorite destination for tourists and photographers.
I managed to capture the radiant energy of the blooming flowers set against the flat patterns of the dark green leaves. Though the mid-day sun was pretty bright, I was able to retrieve details in the whites and shadows. So I could add depth to the lightest colors and tone down the reflections. Then there were dozens of tiny, dark bugs that were sitting on the white petals. They had to go (on the photo).
I’ve made dramatic, 40” wide prints of this image. That’s close to a 500% increase from the original file size. Given that the shapes are more important than any image details, large prints still work.
