Throwing plates on the wheel can present less technical challenges than other shapes (unless you’re making a matching set). You’re basically pulling a ball of clay outwards.
The real challenges come with balancing proportions, glazing and decorations. How wide, how tall, wide rim, narrow rim are some basic design choices. Then do you decorate the rim, or add a pattern to the glaze?
As you can see on this early prototype, I kept my choices pretty basic. It’s a good start. The next iteration would be an inch or two wider, with the same narrower rim.
