The illustration for this poster was drawn with Adobe Photoshop®. The “combatants” were actually a couple demonstrating a two-person Kung Fu set. I stylized them from a photo that I had taken at a previous tournament. I wanted to create a flat-patterned illustration that had the look of a block print.
They’re set against the yin yang symbol to help convey the interdependence of contrary forces. The symbol is placed on a gold field with a red border, classic colors for a Chinese martial arts tournament. We sold the posters at the tournament, with the proceeds going to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
The theme for that year’s tournament was “Success through the humility of true sportsmanship.”
It’s a hard one to translate really, but the general meaning is “greeting and making way to each other” it’s a Confucian concept of benevolence, especially in reference to competition.
